[for all of her life, she had always chosen the wrong men. they wanted her for sex and she had always been willing to have fun. until it wasn't fun. she'd fall for them and each time her heart broken. until Adam. who felt the same way as her, even liked the things she did that other men had said were "too much". Adam truly liked her and she saw that. even the first night they had met, when he had earnestly asked her out on a date, Maria had felt it. this was different.
so she had gone to bed, excited to see her boyfriend in the morning. to hold him close and pour her heart out on how much she cared about him. but when she woke up on her own, to no Adam, to no food or a text or anything; Maria knew something was wrong. something was very, very wrong. there was a gnawing in her gut as she texted Adam asking where he was. his earlier text "see you in a few hours be safe" seemed almost mocking.
her mind tried to come up with a logical explanation. he got the food and made a quick stop to his place but got tired. fell asleep. that was possible. but it didn't feel right. maybe it was crazy but she went to his apartment and let herself in. there were no signs of him and Mr. Whiskers quickly went to her and started screaming for attention and food. no food in his bowl for breakfast and no signs of Adam.
something happened. all of her texts went unanswered, Adam never came back to his apartment or fed Mr. Whiskers. the police wouldn't listen to her. told her it was obvious her shitty boyfriend left her. no matter the evidence she gave, the proof he was gone, they didn't listen to her. "shouldn't a woman like you be used to men realizing they don't want a woman showing off the goods as their girl?" because these fucking pigs came to the bar. they were regulars. but she was used to this. men like this not taking her seriously and she took it. still did the paperwork to claim for a missing person the night after they made it a point to pay for lapdances from her. laughing about how it was obvious she cared so much about her "missing boyfriend". still she followed her. she started staying at Adam's apartment more, praying Adam would just show up. but he didn't. the police didn't take this seriously either.
the only people who listened to her were Mary and the bartender Tom. the only people she could cry to. explain she'd prefer if Adam did just leave her because she would know he was okay that way. but Adam wouldn't abandon her like this, wouldn't just leave the cat he rescued either. without her, the cat would have been starving. she made flyers, started asking around, but it was as if he just disappeared into thin air.
Maria moved into his apartment to take the lease over, giving up her own apartment. her place wouldn't take cats and Mr. Whiskers needed her. Adam needed her. at this point she was looking into private detectives. they tried to tell her usually things like this turned out that the guy got cold feet and left. but Maria told them that was the answer she really was hoping for even if she knew it wasn't that. there was no giving up, though. Maria couldn't give up on Adam. he deserved someone who wouldn't abandon him.
after a month, she was on high alert. every noise, every movement could catch her attention. so when she heard something outside the door, she immediately ran to open it thinking maybe it was Adam who didn't have his key.
and it was Adam. what was left of him but it was him there on the ground. she screamed and went to the ground, immediately holding him.] Adam, Adam. Oh my god, oh my...[she checked his pulse and was so grateful to feel it before screaming down the hallway for someone to call 911 because she was terrified to let him go. as if letting him go would make him disappear. it took a few times before someone came out, telling her they did and asking what happened. Maria was a sobbing mess and shaking her head, as she clung to him. she didn't know but she wasn't letting him go.]
